Normandale Students Named Honorable Mention Delegation at Model UN Conference in New York

Normandale students from the Politics and Law Club participated in the National Model United Nations Conference (MNUM), a Model UN simulation for college and university students, in New York from March 29-April 2.

The Normandale student delegation, which was led by Politics and Law Club Faculty Advisor and Political Science Instructor Elizabeth Klages, included Joaquin Alvarez, Zola Cain, Vijay Clarkson, Elliot Connaire, Taliyah Crosby, James Davis, Utsav Dongre, Naimjom Ghafurov, Mudan Ghedi, Viggo Heng, Aliyah Olsen, Charles Strain to form a joint delegation 18-student delegation representing Finland.

Normandale received a Honorable Mention Delegation award.

The students served on seven committees, which included General Assembly First Committee, General Assembly Second Committee, General Assembly Three, Non-Proliferation Treaty Review (NPT), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO), United National Environmental Assembly (UNEA), and United Nationals High Commission for Refugees

Alvarez and Davis were the team’s Head Delegates and were repeat participants. Cain was also returning participant for Normandale.

Normandale was one of three community colleges to participate. There were 174 colleges and universities that were part of the conference. Approximately 2,500 students attended the conference from the U.S. and around the world.

The students were able to attend NMUN due to funding from Student Life, as well as a generous contribution through the Normandale Foundation from the Kopp Foundation.
